In
the video Denis Dutton talks about how people view beauty. In the beginning
everyone answers the simplest of answers which was, “Beauty is in the eye of
the beholder.” Or “Its what moves you as a person.” But he goes onto explain a
Darwinian way of looking at your beauty. He tells us that beauty is adaptive,
by works of art and entertainment. Everywhere we go in the world there are
different views, and different things that people see as beautiful. Some
examples in this video would be that Beethoven is big in Japan, or Shakespeare
is translated into every language on the earth.
He also makes a point that Beauty is nature’s way of acting at a
distance. An example of that would be the peacock. Beauty can be pleasure; just
by the looks or feelings you get in certain situations. It’s the different
types of landscapes that people like, no matter where it is, it is your preference.
Which is why they make calendars for them, so people can buy there favorite
places to be and put them up on their wall. He then adds that it is all about
the experience, and in that picture of the beautiful landscapes, animals, and
then there is a pathway wanting you to follow it. If you were apart of that
experience you would want to follow it. That is what sells these types of
pictures or calenders. These are the points that are made in Denis Duttons
video.
